Why it keeps happening

You swear you only ate a small piece. Two hours later the meter says 179.

A kitchen counter with a large warehouse-club cinnamon jar, a glucose meter reading high, and a half-eaten slice of pie

You already knew cinnamon was supposed to help. So you shook the big Costco jar over your oatmeal every morning for a year, and the numbers did not care. Then you read the comments about cinnamon and your liver and cut back to a quarter teaspoon. Now you were taking too little to help and still more coumarin than you should.

The jar in almost every American kitchen is cassia. So is the $8 Spring Valley bottle at Walmart: 500 mg a pill, four a day to get anywhere, and "did nothing" is the most common review. The Facebook softgels are worse. People cut them open and found oil, no cinnamon, and a Made in China sticker. Cinnamon did not fail you. The cinnamon you were sold did.

The things that did not fix it

  • The Costco jar on oatmeal

Cassia, high in coumarin. A teaspoon on oatmeal is not a measured dose, and the dose you would need is not safe with cassia.

  • The $8 cassia capsules

500 mg of "cinnamon bark" with no species and no coumarin figure on the label. One a day does nothing. Four a day is a liver question.

  • The Facebook ad softgels

An MCT oil softgel with a vague amount of cinnamon added, from a company with no working phone number. Buyers cut one open and found oil.

How it works

The TrueBark™ formula: whole Ceylon bark, a 10:1 bark extract, and chromium.

Three ingredients, each at a dose that does something. Nothing padding the capsule.

Ceylon Cinnamon capsules beside thin, layered Ceylon quills on a dark slate surface, lit from the side
  1. 01
Ceylon bark slows the sugar rush

Compounds in true Ceylon bark slow the enzymes that break carbs into sugar, so a meal reaches your blood in a trickle instead of a flood. That is the smaller two-hour number.

  2. 02
The 10:1 extract makes the dose count

The extract concentrates the active part of the bark. It is why two capsules a day are enough, instead of the four or five that cheap bottles need. No grocery store jar gets you there.

  3. 03
Chromium helps insulin do its job

200 mcg of chromium picolinate, the mineral tied to how well your cells answer insulin, and to sugar cravings. It is the one most Americans are short on.

Not a replacement for your medication. Keep taking what your doctor gave you, and bring your numbers to the recheck.

What changes

Smaller spikes after meals. A morning number you can take to the recheck.

Cinnamon is the oldest blood sugar remedy there is, and the one most people buy wrong. Here is what changes when you get the right kind at the right dose.

A woman in her sixties pouring coffee at her kitchen counter in the morning, relaxed
  • Smaller spikes after meals

Ceylon bark slows how fast the sugar in a meal reaches your blood. The two-hour check after a carb-heavy dinner climbs less. Treats do not spike you as much.

  • A lower morning number

The fasting number is the one people watch, and the one that moves first. Customers report it drifting down in weeks two to four.

  • Cravings ease up, less snacking

When the spike is smaller, so is the crash after it, and the crash is what sends you to the pantry. Late-night snacking is often the first thing to go.

  • Nothing for your liver to worry about

True Ceylon carries under 0.1% coumarin. You can take a working dose every single day, for years, without the liver worry that comes with the cassia jar.

A dietitian’s view

What a diabetes educator tells her patients to look for on a cinnamon bottle

Fifteen years in a diabetes education clinic, most of it undoing what the spice aisle taught people.

Elena Marsh, a registered dietitian in her clinic, holding a Ceylon Cinnamon bottle
When a patient tells me they are taking cinnamon, my first question is which kind. Nine times out of ten it is the Costco jar or a cheap cassia pill. At a working dose that is a coumarin load I will not sign off on. So I give them a short list. It has to say Ceylon, Cinnamomum verum, on the label. It has to give the coumarin number. It has to be 1,200 milligrams a day or more, with food, every day, not a sprinkle when you remember. And it has to be tested for lead, because ground cinnamon has been recalled for that. Dosera checks every box on that list, and the two-hour readings my patients bring back are the first ones I have seen cinnamon change.

What to expect

What customers report, week by week

Everyone is different. This is the pattern in the reviews, and it is not overnight.

  1. Days 1 to 7Easy to take, nothing to feel yet

One with breakfast, one with dinner. No taste, no burps when taken with food. A few people want less dessert by the weekend. Most feel nothing yet, and that is normal.

  2. Weeks 2 to 4The morning number starts to move

This is when the fasting number tends to come down, a few points at a time. Snacking between meals eases up for many people.

  3. Weeks 4 to 8The two-hour check looks different

Smaller climbs after a carb-heavy meal. People say a treat does not spike them the way it used to.

  4. Month 3The recheck

The A1C is a three-month average, so this is the first visit where it can show. Take your meter log with you. Most people stay on it.

The Costco jar never did this

I shook the Costco cinnamon on my oatmeal for a year and my after-dinner readings never budged. Turns out that is cassia, and you can't take enough of it anyway. A month on these, one with breakfast and one with supper, and I am seeing 130s instead of 160s at the two-hour check. My husband takes them now too.

Morning number down 12 points

Blood work came back high in March and my dad and both his brothers are diabetic, so this matters to me. One with my eggs, one with dinner. The pan dulce run after work has mostly stopped, did not expect that part. Morning number is down about 12 points over six weeks. No taste, easy to swallow.

Slow to start

First three weeks I saw nothing and almost asked for my money back. Week five my after-lunch readings started coming in 20 to 25 points lower. It works, but it took longer than I expected, so one star off. Don't expect it overnight. Give it the full 90 days and keep checking. Staying on it.

My old ones were cassia

My last blood work showed liver enzymes a little high and the pharmacist asked what I was taking. The cheap cinnamon pills I had been on for two years were cassia. Switched to these because the species and the coumarin number are right on the label. Fasting is the same or a little better, and the enzymes came back normal in August.

Not finishing the bowl anymore

I bake for a living, so sugar is on my hands all day, and I have had crazy cravings for as long as I can remember. Two weeks in I noticed I was tasting the batter and not finishing the bowl. My A1C in September came back 5.6 from 5.9. I take it with the berberine now.

Doctor said keep doing it

Seventy-one and borderline. I did not want another prescription. Two months of these with my meals and my fasting went from 118 to 103. My doctor would not say it was the cinnamon, but he looked at the bottle, nodded, and told me to keep doing whatever I was doing. I take them with my oatmeal and coffee.

The question everyone asks

Is this the real Ceylon, or cassia with a Ceylon label?

Fair question. Sellers have shipped cassia as Ceylon, oil softgels with no cinnamon in them, and second bottles with no smell at all. Here is how you know.

A bowl of oatmeal with a glass of water and one Ceylon Cinnamon capsule beside it
  1. 01
The species and the coumarin number are on the label

Cinnamomum verum, grown in Sri Lanka, coumarin under 0.1%. Cassia cannot print that number. Every batch is checked by an independent US lab for species, coumarin, lead and heavy metals.

  2. 02
    Cut a capsule open

You get tan bark powder that smells mild and a little sweet. Cassia smells hot and red, like the candy. Oil softgels leak. If what you find is not Ceylon bark, send it back for every cent.

  3. 03
If it does nothing for you, you pay nothing

Thirty days, every cent back, no return shipment. Take two a day with meals, watch your morning number and your two-hour check, and decide for yourself.

Your guarantee

The Dosera 30-Day Promise: finish the bottle, and if it is not for you, every cent comes back.

Common questions

Still deciding if Ceylon Cinnamon is right for you?

It is Cinnamomum verum bark from Sri Lanka, with coumarin under 0.1%. That species and that coumarin figure are on the label. Every batch is tested by an independent US lab for species, coumarin and lead. Cut a capsule open: Ceylon bark is tan, mild and a little sweet, not the hot red smell of cassia.
